The year 2012 has been declared European Year for Active Ageing and International Solidarity. The European Commission considers necessary and urgent that all citizens reflect on the fact of ageing and push forward trough intergenerational solidarity the full integration of older people in the present social life.
The ageing population is a social phenomenon that increases gradually and quickly, whose social incidence has been very significant and will be decisive throughout the XXI Century. In the “Third Report about Demography”, published the last month of April by the European Commission and the European Statistics Office (Eurostat), emphasises the evidence that people live longer and the need for full active incorporation of older people in social life.
In today’s knowledge society, the new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) play a crucial role for the personal development and social order. Acquire, manage, disseminate and understand the information through the use of appropriate technologies is a very important aspect of daily life and social behaviour. We have to enable all citizens, including seniors, to benefit from the positive results generated by the scientific-technical revolution of our time. The difficulties that older people have in the access and use of new Technologies should not generate inequality and increase the risk of exclusion.
The III Internacional Conferences on Elderly and New Technologies claim to promote the inclusion of all citizens, especially seniors, in the knowledge society. Among the different issues that will be object of reflection and research it points out the interest in the following topic: how the introduction into the daily life of the ICT impact on the personal way of perceiving, relating and acting. In the next International Conference the work done on the previous Conference will extended and completed, deepening the analysis and study about how and to what extent the use of ICT, in the elderly, leading to responsible attitudes and commitments that provide a more active ageing.
